Wolfgang Johannes Helbich was born on March 24, 1935, in Berlin, Germany. He is a son of Hans Georg Helbich and Gertraud A. Helbich (maiden name Carras).
Wolfgang Johannes Helbich studied American history at Princeton University, New Jersey. He graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Then, he pursued his education at the Free University of Berlin where he learned history, English and Romance philology, philosophy and education. He passed the Staatsexamen and received his Master of Arts degree in 1960. Two years later, obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Wolfgang Helbich also attended Heidelberg University and Sorbonne University.
Wolfgang Johannes Helbich started his career as an educator at Heidelberg University where he lectured from 1962 to 1974. During this time, he had also lectured for five years at the European division of the University of Maryland starting in 1967.
Helbich joined the professor’s staff of the Ruhr-University Bochum in 1974 where he has taught Modern History with special emphasis on North American history.
At the beginning of the new decade, Helbich concentrated on emigration research, in particular, on collecting and analyzing German emigration letters. He created the Bochum Immigrant Letter Collection which contained more than five thousand pieces of correspondence from German immigrants to friends and relatives who remained in their native country.
The archive served a base for Helbich’s first book titled ‘Alle Menschen sind dort gleich: Die deutsche Amerika-Auswanderung im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert’ (‘All Men Are Created Equal There: German Immigration to America in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries’) published in 1988. The work written in collaboration with Annette Haubold provides an overview of German immigration to the United States through a sampling of letters from the archive, essays in both English and German discussing Germans in the United States, and a look at assimilation.
Then, Helbich edited along with Walter D. Kamphoefner and Ulrike Sommer a volume that appeared in English translation in 1991 as ‘News from the Land of Freedom: German Immigrants Write Home’. A selection of correspondence from the Bochum Collection, the book was arranged in twenty sets of letters by groups or individuals, following the progress of specific immigrants in America over the course of decades.
In addition, Wolfgang Johannes Helbich has translated about 25 books, worked on a biography of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and contributed to the German part of the five-volume Guide to the Study of United States History Outside the United States.
