Inspired by her own granddaughter Natalie, Vice President Joe Biden’s wife, Jill, tells a story through a child’s eyes of what family life is like when a parent is at war across the world. When her father leaves for a year of being at war, Natalie knows that she will miss him. Natalie is proud of her father, but there is nothing to stop her from wishing he was home. Some things do help her feel better. Natalie works with her Nana to send her dad and the other service men and women cookies and treats they have made. Natalie, her mom, and her brother can see and talk to Dad over the computer, and the kindness of friends at school and at church help her feel supported and loved. But there is nothing like the day when her Dad comes home at last.

(An intimate look at the love that built the Biden family ...)
An intimate look at the love that built the Biden family and the delicate balancing act of the woman at its center "How did you get this number?" Those were the first words Jill Biden spoke to U.S. senator Joe Biden when he called her out of the blue to ask her on a date.
Jill Tracy Biden is an American educator. She is also the wife of former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.
Background
Jill Tracy Biden (née Jacobs, previously Stevenson) was born on June 3, 1951, Hammonton, New Jersey, to Donald C. Jacobs, a bank teller, and Bonny Jean Godfrey, a homemaker. She is the eldest of five sisters, who spent much of their childhood in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania.
Education
Jill Biden was focused to be independent and did odd jobs like waiting tables at the Jersey Shore when she was only 15. While she was a defiant student with an active social life at Upper Moreland High School in Montgomery County, she loved the English subject. After completing her graduation in 1969, she enrolled in a fashion merchandising course in a junior college in Pennsylvania, but did not find it satisfying.
Biden later entered the University of Delaware to study English as her major, but postponed the course for a year to work as a model for a local agency in Wilmington. She eventually returned to college and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1975. In 1987, Biden received a second Master of Arts degree, this one in English from Villanova University. In January 2007, at age 55, she got a Doctor of Education in educational leadership from the University of Delaware.
To make extra money during her year off, Biden did a little modeling for a local agency. Then-U.S. Senator Joe Biden saw her picture in an advertisement posted on a bus shelter and became smitten. He sought her out, and the two went on a blind date in the spring of 1975. In 1977, two years after they met, the Bidens were married.
Biden worked for five years in a psychiatric hospital where she taught English to adolescents with emotional disabilities. From 1993 through 2008, Biden was an instructor at the Stanton/Wilmington campus of Delaware Technical & Community College, where she taught English composition and remedial writing, with an emphasis on instilling confidence in students.
Biden has been a professor of English at Northern Virginia Community College since 2009, the same year that her husband was sworn in as vice president of the United States after the 2008 presidential win of Barack Obama. In 2010, she hosted the first-ever White House Summit on Community Colleges with President Obama and continued to work on related outreach for the administration as later seen with the 2012 Community College to Career bus tour.
With one of her stepsons in the military, Biden became involved with the nonprofit organization Delaware Boots on the Ground, which helps families during times of military deployment. Biden and First Lady Michelle Obama also launched Joining Forces, an initiative which has provided educational and employment resources as well as health/wellness services to military personnel and their families. She also wrote a children's book, Don't Forget, God Bless Our Troops (2012), based on her granddaughter's story of a military family's experience with deployment. Additionally, Biden co-founded the Book Buddies program.
On November 6, 2012, Joe Biden was reelected to a second term as vice president. After President Obama's acceptance speech, Jill Biden appeared with her husband, their family and the Obama family onstage at the McCormick Place in Chicago to celebrate the reelection. She will continue to serve as America's second lady until January 2017. Jill Biden has maintained her work as an advocate for military families and has also traveled abroad, having focused on the rights and welfare of girls and women in Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone. She has focused on women's educational opportunities in a tour of Asia as well that took her to Japan, Korea, and Vietnam and later served as a U.S. representative to announce food aid to Malawi.
The Biden family faced tragedy when Joe's son Beau passed away from brain cancer in 2015 at the age of 46. Around this time there was also the question of whether Joe Biden would run for U.S. president. He ultimately decided not to run, with the Democratic party nomination going to former secretary of state Hillary Clinton.

Religion
Jill's family was not particularly religious, but in ninth grade, Jill Biden independently took classes in order to join the Presbyterian church.
Politics
Following George W. Bush's reelection in 2004, she urged her husband to run again for president, later saying: "I literally wore black for a week. I just could not believe that he won, because I felt that things were already so bad. I was so against the Iraq War. And I said to Joe, 'You've got to change this, you have to change this.'"
Once her husband was selected as the Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's running mate, she began campaigning again. She wore a Blue Star Mothers Club pin in recognition of Beau Biden's deployment to Iraq. She was not a polished political speaker but was able to establish a connection with the audience.
Views
Jill Biden is a philanthropist. She holds membership in a range of charitable organizations.
Jill has embraced motherhood with gusto, and she wrote recently on Instagram, "I’ve had many titles over the years, but my forever favorite is "Mom." Beau and Hunt - the boys who made me their mother. And Ashley - the daughter who completed our family."
Quotations:
"One of the things that make community colleges so special is they do not pick and choose their students - they work with all students."
"Being a teacher is not what I do, it's who I am."
"Women who are interested in pursuing bachelor's and master's degrees - especially in STEM fields - benefit from starting at a community college. They offer an affordable education, with flexible schedules and degrees close to home."
"In the past, there has been a stigma surrounding community colleges, where they were seen as a less viable option because they are not four-year universities. I know differently and so do the millions of people across the country who have received an affordable, quality higher education at community college."
