Barua began his career as an assistant professor at State University of New York in 1982. A year later he took a position of a lecturer at the University of California at Los Angeles. Since 1989 Dibakar has been a professor of English at Golden West College. Also since 1996 he has been working as a chairman of English department at the same college.
Barua is a member of Academic Senate for California Community Colleges.
On October 23, 1982 Dibakar Barua married Carol Ann Wester, with whom he divorced in February 1997. On December 18, 1998 he married Rupa Ward.
