Richard Philip Abels was born on October 31, 1951 in Brooklyn, New York, United States; the son of Milton and Blanche Abels.
Richard Abels received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College in 1973. Two years later he was given a Master of Arts by Columbia University. In 1982 he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree by the same university.
Richard Abels began his academic career as a preceptor at Columbia University in 1977. He held this position until 1980, becoming an instructor there in 1981. From 1981 to 1982 he served as a visiting assistant professor at Cornell College.
In 1982 Abels began his life-long cooperation with the United States Naval Academy, first as an assistant professor of history till 1986, then as an associate professor of history, finally becoming a full professor in 1991. From 2008 to 2014 he also was Chair of the history department at the academy. Nowadays he is a professor emeritus.
As an author and historian, he specializes in Anglo-Saxon England and medieval military history. Abels’ dissertation in this field became the basis for his first study, Lordship and Military Obligation in Anglo-Saxon England. In Abels’ second study, he composes a biographical portrait of the medieval king Alfred the Great, emphasizing Alfred’s battles. He also authored two more books Raoul of Cambrai: An Old French Epic and The Normans and their Adversaries: Essays in Memory of C. Warren Hollister.

2001Richard Abels is a member of the American History Association, Medieval Academy of America, Charles Homer Haskins Society of which he was the president in 1998-2001. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
Richard Abels married Ellen Harrison on May 31, 1975. The marriage produced two children - Paul and Rebecca.
