Actor musician singer songwriter
Davis, Mac was born as Morris Mac Davis on January 21, 1942, in Lubbock, Texas, United States. Son of Thomas Jefferson and Edith Irene (Lankford) Davis. He was raised in a strict religious family.
Mac Davis attended Lubbock High School, which he graduated from in 1958. Davis also studied at Emory University in Atlanta and Georgia State College.
Mac Davis grew up with a love of country music but turned to rock 'n' roll in 1955 when he saw Elvis Presley and another Lubbock boy Buddy Holly on the same show, an event referred to in his 1980 song "Texas In My Rear View Mirror." Davis began performing in local rock groups while still in his teens. When he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, he started working with rock bands in Atlanta and formed a band of his own while in college, called the Zots, and made two singles for OEK Records, and moonlighted playing fraternity parties, high school hops, and local clubs around Atlanta. Then turned to writing songs.
After moving to Georgia, Davis broke into the music business in 1962, when he was hired by the Chicago-based record label Vee-Jay as their Atlanta-based regional manager as well as by Liberty Records. Davis married when he was 20 and his son, Scotty, became the subject of several songs including "Watching Scotty Grow," recorded by Bobby Goldsboro and Anthony Newley. He made several unsuccessful records, including a revival of the Drifters' "Honey Love." Much of this early work was collected in a 1984 compilation, inaccurately called 20 Golden Songs. A parody of Bob Dylan, "I Protest," was produced by Joe South.
After joining the Liberty label three years later, in 1967 he moved to Los Angeles to head the company's publishing arm, Metric Music. In addition to running Metric's day-to-day operations, he also began composing his own songs, with Glen Campbell, Bobby Goldsboro, Lou Rawls, Gallery, Freddie Hart, Ray Price, and Kenny Rogers & the First Edition among the artists recording his work. Davis wrote "The Phantom Strikes Again," which was recorded by Sam The Sham And The Pharaohs, "Daddy's Little Man" was recorded by O.C. Smith and, in 1967, Mac had his first chart success when Lou Rawls recorded "You're Good For Me."
Davis became famous as a songwriter and got his start as an employee of Nancy Sinatra's company, Boots Enterprises, Inc. Davis was with Boots for several years in the late 1960s. During his time there, he played on many of Sinatra's recordings, and she worked him into her stage shows. Boots Enterprises also acted as Davis's publishing company, publishing songs such as "In the Ghetto," "Friend, Lover, Woman, Wife," "Home," "It's Such a Lonely Time of Year" which were recorded by Elvis Presley. Davis also wrote "Memories" and "Nothingsville" for Elvis Presley's 1968 comeback television special. Presley also recorded "Don't Cry, Daddy," "Clean Up Your Own Back Yard," "Charro" inspired by Davis' son Scotty telling Mac not to be upset by television footage of the Vietnam war. His 1968 breakout smash for Presley, "A Little Less Conversation," became popular again after appearing in the 2001 film Ocean's 11. The following year it was re-mixed by Junkie XL and hit number one in 26 countries.
In 1970 Davis left Boots Enterprises and decided to pursue a career of his own in country music. The same year he was hired at Columbia Records. His own singing career was launched with a 1971 album and the 1972 hit "Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me." The first album, named after Glen Campbell's description of him, Song Painter, was full of good material but his voice was limited and the album was bathed in strings. Davis topped the United States charts in 1972 and reached the country Top 20 with the pleasant but inconsequential "Baby, Don't Get Hooked On Me," its success ironically being due to the publicity created by angry feminists. The album was sold over one million copies and in September 1972 was awarded a gold disc by the Recording Industry Association of America. Rolling Stone magazine, disliking his pop-country hits, claimed that: "Davis had done more to set back the cause of popular music in the 70s than any other figure." "Something's Burning" was a hit for Kenny Rogers And The First Edition, while Gallery made the United States charts with the much-recorded "I Believe In Music." Davis wrote the songs for the Glen Campbell movie Norwood, including "Everything A Man Could Ever Need."
His crossover success continued throughout the decade, with singles like 1974's "Stop and Smell the Roses," 1975's "Burnin' Thing," and the following year's "Forever Lovers" scoring with listeners in both camps. Drawing on his experience as a musician, Davis hosted Labor of Love, a live radio show out of Los Angeles, playing classic country tunes and interviewing artists and songwriters. Davis' influence has extended well beyond music. Between 1974 and 1976 he had his own NBC series, The Mac Davis Show on NBC, followed by a string of specials, and also played Carl, Rodney Carrington's irascible father-in-law, on the ABC series Rodney. In 1979, he also starred in one of the best-known football movies of all time North Dallas Forty with Nick Nolte and had his Las Vegas club debut the same year.
Davis' success continued at Casablanca Records in the early 1980s. "You're My Bestest Friend," an obvious nod to Don Williams' success, was a United States country hit in 1981, "It's Hard to Be Humble," the title track of his 1980 album, was the first of four consecutive Top Ten country hits that culminated with his biggest country single, "Hooked on Music," the next year. In 1980, Mac also starred in a TV movie, Cheaper to Keep Her, and in the family film Possums (1998), which delighted audiences at the Sundance Film Festival in 1999. However, a co-starring role opposite Jackie Gleason and Karl Malden in 1983's disastrous The Sting II effectively ended Davis' career in Hollywood, and by 1985, he had recorded his last Top Ten hit, "I Never Made Love (Till I Made Love With You)," which was on the United States country charts for six months in 1985.
Davis chose to retire in 1989 but the next year, in 1990 he made a comeback as a songwriter, co-authoring Dolly Parton's hit "White Limozeen." That same year, he also took over the title role in the Broadway hit The Will Rogers Follies. In 1991, admitting he was an alcoholic, he spent eight months at the Betty Ford Clinic. After intensive treatment for alcoholism, Davis eventually resumed his career with a new album in 1994. Will Write Songs for Food, his first LP (Long Play) in nearly a decade. Davis was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2000. In 2010, Davis paired up with Weezer's Rivers Cuomo to write "Time Flies," and in 2013 penned "Addicted to You" for Avicii's debut studio album True. In 2015 he won a BMI Pop Award as a co-writer for Bruno Mars's single "Young Girls."

2016Mac Davis has used his celebrity status to bring about positive change, supporting charitable organizations such as the FAME Girls' Ranch and Pasadena's Humane Society, among others. He has a star on Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame as well as a very special tribute: Mac Davis Lane, a street named in his honor in Lubbock, Texas, his hometown.
Quotations:
"One of my real goals was to hear someone whistling a song I'd written."
"Elvis was just like a big old kid. It was like he never got past 19, I don't think, in a lotta ways."
"I didn't have a lot of communication with Elvis. You had to go through a barricade to get to Elvis. It was people hanging on every word, and I felt very uncomfortable a lot of times. If it was just me and Elvis one on one, which only happened once or twice in the times that I did see him, it was really comfortable. He was a cool guy. Easy laugh, nice guy."
"There was a chance for me to write one song for the section where Elvis sat in his black leather outfit and sang the old hits. At eight o'clock the next morning I had written Memories."
Although Mac Davis was physically small, he had a penchant for getting into fistfights. Once he told: "In those days, it was all about football, rodeo, and fistfights. Oh, man, I got beat up so much while I was growing up in Lubbock." In an interview with the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal newspaper, Davis said: "I was 5 feet, 9 inches, and weighed 125 pounds. I joined Golden Gloves, but didn't do good even in my division."
Mac Davis is a big fan and a friend of Elvis Presley.
