Educated studied piano under his brother Manuel and under Asunción Parra, Manuel M. Ponce, Pedro Luis Ogazón. Traveled in Europe and the United States of America at various periods from 1922 to 1936.
Received an excellent musical training under composer Manuel Ponce. He spent some time in Europe (1922-1923), then lived in New York City. Returning to Mexico in 1928, he established the Orquesta Sinfonica de Mexico, developing it into a first-class ensemble. From 1928 to 1934 he was director of the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico. From 1973 until his death he was the head of the music department at Mexico's National Institute of Fine Arts.
