(Literacy is one of the pivotal issues of today. This book...)
Literacy is one of the pivotal issues of today. This book aims to answer the call for hands-on resources designed to form a partnership with tutors by helping students to make the connection between learning the skills of reading, and using reading to improve and enhance their lives. For librarians, Weibel's resource book suggests specific teaching roles as well as knowing the kinds of books that can be used with new readers. She details ways to teach reading that go beyond basic skills and make use of the range of books available in a public library by emphasising applicable materials, demonstrating how those materials fit into an instructional programme and suggesting both types of books and specific titles. Librarians are invited to look at their total collection from the perspective of adult literacy students, and to think more creatively of ways to use that collection with adults just learning to read. The practical information here is divided into four sections: part one provides an overview of the adult literacy student and of the role of the library; part two describes in detail resources that tutors can use with their literacy students, and suggests a variety of lessons in using those materials; part three touches on all aspects of a library-based reading programme; and part four discusses the essential role the library must play in a community's efforts to provide access to learning and information to all.
