In the early 1980's weight loss by reducing calories to an extremely low level but preventing muscle loss with the addition of large amounts of protein was done with three approaches. One was to use high protein meats and fish, the second was to supplement food with vitamins and other supplements. A third was the "liquid diet" of hydrolysate of collagen which resulted in some fatalities. This book contains the research articles presented at a Symposium organized by some of the leading medical researchers in the field in 1983 in Falmouth Massachusetts. They were George L Blackburn, Harvard University, George Bray, USC, Los Angeles and Frederick J. Stare, Harvard.
