Iain Sproat attended Winchester College from 1952 till 1957. He finished his studies at University of Aix-en-Provence (now Aix-Marseille University) in 1958. In 1962 Mr. Sproat graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford University, receiving his Master of Arts degree.
From 1970 till 1983 Mr. Sproat was a Conservative member of parliament for Aberdeen (South), United Kingdom, and for Harwich since 1992. Between 1972 and 1976 he served at Royal Green Jackets, becoming a lieutenant. Then he served as minister of aviation and shipping in 1981-1983, minister of tourism between 1982 and 1983, and minister responsible for government statistics, retail trade, distributive trades, and video, cinema, and film industries during the years of 1981-1983, all posts in Great Britain.
Iain Sproat was a chair and Principal Private Secretary to secretary of state for Scotland at Milner and Company, Ltd., during 1973-1974. He was a member of the British parliamentary delegation to oversee elections in South Vietnam starting from 1973, delegation to the Soviet Union since 1974, and leader of delegation to Austria from 1980. Mr. Sproat served as a chair of Soviet and Eastern European Group of the Conservative Foreign Affairs Committee between 1975 and 1981. He was a leader of the Conservative Group of the Scottish Select Committee during 1979-1981.
In 1979-1981 he held the position of a chair at Scottish Conservative Committee. From 1986 till 1991 Mr. Sproat was a trustee at African Medical and Research Foundation (Flying Doctors). Iain Sproat was a special advisor to prime minister Margaret Thatcher for the 1987 general election. In 1989 he became a trustee of Scottish Self-Governing Schools Trust. Then Mr. Sproat was appointed lecturer on guerrilla warfare. Since 1983 he acted as a consultant to numerous firms, including N. M. Rothschild & Sons, Ltd. (a merchant banking firm).
