GIDE, Charles was born in 1847 in Uzès, France.
He was one of the professors of economics appointed to the Faculties of Law in French universities in 1876. These appointments broke the hold of the laissez faire liberal school in French economics and Gide’s 1883 Principes. was a means of spreading a more open-minded attitude towards historical and other approaches. Economics was only part of his general interest in social philosophy and he was an enthusiastic and successful advocate of the co-operative movement.
