Background
HODGSKIN, Thomas was born in 1787 in England.
(From you, therefore, and you only, from the gradual progr...)
From you, therefore, and you only, from the gradual progress of your opinions displayed through your representatives, can sailors expect any redress, or can laws be enacted having, for their bases, confidence in you, by which you will be taught to think well of yourselves? It is an old saying, the voice of the people is the voice of God it is likely to be the voice of truth ;where many men are employed thinking on the same subject, if it is within their reach, as all moral subjects are, and this is one, it is not probable all should err. To the truth and goodness of the following opinions, my heart and reason strongly assent. It remains with you to decide on them. (Thomas Hodgskin (1787-1869) was an English socialist writ...)
Thomas Hodgskin (1787-1869) was an English socialist writer on political economy, critic of capitalism, free-market anarchist and defender of free trade and early trade unions. He joined the navy at the age of 12. He rose rapidly through the ranks in the years of naval struggle with the French to the rank of first lieutenant. Following the naval defeat of the French the opportunities for advancement closed and Hodgskin increasingly ran into disciplinary trouble with his superiors, eventually leading to his court martial and dismissal in 1812. This prompted his first book An Essay on Naval Discipline (1813). After studying for 3 years in Edinburgh, he returned to London in 1823 as a journalist. He joined forces with Joseph Clinton Robinson in founding the Mechanics Magazine. Despite his high profile in the agitated revolutionary times of the 1820s, he retreated into the realm of Whig journalism after the Reform Act of 1832. He became an advocate of free trade and spent 15 years writing for The Economist. His other works include Popular Political Economy (1827).

There is 236 HANSE TOWNS POPULATION. nothing in the form of these governments which is worthy of imitation, or which can be imitated by the rest of Germany. In fact, most of the cities of Germany have formerly had similar constitutions, and they have either destroyed themselves, or they have been destroyed for their inefficiency. There is nothing in these governments more than the expence of a too numerous magistracy to prevent the growing prosperity of the towns. The inhabitants, from their extensive communication, must increase in knowledge and liberality, and, from the one specimen which I have given of the influence of their press, and from the nature of their occupations rescuing them from those fatal speculations which too often occupy the mere literary men of Germany, they may be expected to exert a more beneficial influence on the whole country, than any other equal portions of the community. All the free towns have some territory more than is enclosed by their walls, and some of it, as Ritzebiittel, which belongs to Hamburg, is at a considerable distance from the city. The amount of the inhabitants, subjects of the different free towns, that is, both within and without their walls, is as follows: Frankfort 47,372; Lubeck 43,127; the city has only 25,526; Hamburg 129,739; and Bremen 46,270. Their revenues are estimated, that of Frankfort L. 80,000, that of Lubeck at REVENUES DEPART FROM HAMBURG. 237 L. 37,000, that of Hamburg L. 100,000, and that of Bremen at L. 40,000. It is united with the severest censure and the wannest praise. They describe it " as forming the heart." It must have a great influence on the moral character of the Germans, and it therefore deserves to be explained. The Lutheran religion consists less of an exposition of incomprehensible dogmas than almost any other, and, therefore, what is taught the children under the term religion is very generally morality. It is found principally in the catechism, and a variety of books called the Children's Friend. Of course, the commonly received principles of Christianity are taught; but as these are not susceptible of continued exposition to children, much of the catechism illustrates the duties of life. I transcribe a portion from where chance has led me to open it. "Instructor.--The world must have an author, by whom it has been created; why do you judge so? (Thomas Hodgskin (1787 - 1869) was an English socialist wr...)
Thomas Hodgskin (1787 - 1869) was an English socialist writer on political economy, critic of capitalism and defender of free trade and early trade unions. He used Ricardo's labour theory of value to denounce the appropriation of the most part of value produced by the labour of industrial workers as illegitimate. He propounded these views in a series of lectures at the London Mechanics Institute (later renamed Birkbeck, University of London) where he debated with William Thompson, with whom he shared the critique of capitalist expropriation but not the proposed remedy. The results of these lectures and debates he published as "Labour Defended against the Claims of Capital" (1825), "Popular Political Economy" (1827) and "Natural and Artificial Right of Property Contrasted" (1832). The title of "Labour Defended" was a jibe at James Mill's earlier "Commerce Defended" and signalled his opposition to the latter taking sides with the capitalists against their employees. Despite his high profile in the agitated revolutionary times of the 1820s, he retreated into the realm of Whig journalism after the Reform Act 1832. He became an advocate of free trade and spent 15 years writing for The Economist. He worked on the paper with its founder, James Wilson, and with the young Herbert Spencer. Hodgskin viewed the demise of the Corn Laws as the first step to the downfall of government, and his libertarian anarchism was regarded as too radical by many of the liberals of the Anti-Corn Law League. He left The Economist in 1857, but continued working as a journalist for the rest of his life.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. HODGSKIN, Thomas was born in 1787 in England.
Disgusted by the horrors of naval discipline, he first made a name by his attack on the navy, and established what was essentially an anarchist criticism of society. Turning to writing, he travelled extensively in Germany for the purpose of his book on that country. His economic writings were based on the idea that labour is the sole source of wealth, and that the workers were deprived of their true share of the wealth they produced.
His Popular Political Economy was derived from his controversial lectures to the London Mechanics Institute and constituted the first textbook of socialist economics.
In later life he was a frequent contributor to the Economist. Naval Officer; Journalist.
