Originally stressed the relativism of economics — the danger in particular of transferring economic propositions uncritically from industrial countries to the Third World. Later he placed more emphasis on the extent to which European countries, and the European economic system as a whole, show problems familiar to those in the development field, suggesting that theory and practical experience in that field may throw light on the problems of industrialised countries. Other main interests were in criticising the massive transfer of statistical categories and frameworks to the Third World, and suggesting what might be more appropriate.
