THORNTON, Henry was born in 1760.
Monetary theorist who systematised ideas on money, the velocity of circulation, interest, prices and employment, and international economic relations in his Enquiry.. These ideas are embedded in a defence of the Bank of England’s policy regarding the suspension of cash payments. He later became more critical of the Bank, and favoured a reduced circulation of notes.
Though very successful in his own day, the Enquiry was gradually forgotten until Hollander, Viner, and others rediscovered it and drew attention to its anticipations of modern monetary theory.
