( A classic about the American West and the life and time...)
A classic about the American West and the life and times of one tough cowboy, Monte Walsh. Partial to pretty women, gambling, and practical jokes, Monte doesn't have to look far to find trouble. Luckily for him, Monte's best friend, Chet, is always there to post bail or quickly get Monte out of town. As Monte grows older, though, and the West inevitably changes, he resists changing with it, and shows his dedication and loyalty to the cowboy way of life. The popular 1970 film starring Lee Havin and Jack Palance is loosely based on this moving story by Jack Schaefer. Dreamscape is proud to present Monte Walsh, a classic American western not to be missed.

Shane was made into an award-winning film that—like the novel—became a standard by which later westerns were judged. Readers who have already felt the novel's power or are approaching it for the first time, will find this edition indispensable for coming to terms with its fascinating simplicity, its richness, and its puzzles. This edition reprints the original text of the novel (in 1954 it was edited to remove words that might offend). In addition, the best critical essays about Schaefer and about Shane are included to provide historical and comparative background. An interview with Jack Schaefer and an afterword written by him complete this volume.

stories of how a diverse cross-section of men contributed to Western settlement, Jack Schaefer did just that with Heroes Without Glory. Some Good Men of the Old West. The author offers detailed portraits of the good men that made building communities in the unforgiving wilds of the territories even possible.

( Monte Walsh has never met a horse he couldn’t ride, and...)
Monte Walsh has never met a horse he couldn’t ride, and Chet Rollins has never met one he couldn’t rope. For a decade they are unbeatable and inseparable, working as trail hands throughout the West until finally settling with Cal Brennan’s Slash Y. Their rough cowboy ethics see them through every imaginable challenge: blizzards, rustlers, outlaws, and card games gone wrong. Partial to pretty women, gambling, and practical jokes, Monte is often on the receiving end of trouble, while Chet is always there to break him out of jail or serve as a decoy until Monte can get out of town in a hurry. As the West begins to change, however—the automobile replacing the horse, the herds breaking up—the two friends part ways. Chet marries and goes on to become a successful merchant, banker, and politician; but Monte, unable to imagine anything but the cowboy’s way of life, refuses to the end to leave the range.

( I had lain in my bed thinking of our visitor out in th...)
I had lain in my bed thinking of our visitor out in the bunk in the barn. It scarce seemed possible that he was the same man I had first seen, stern and chilling in his dark solitude, riding up our road. Something in father, something not of words or of actions but of the essential substance of the human spirit, had reached out and spoken to him and he had replied to it and had unlocked a part of himself to us. He was far off and unapproachable at times even when he was right there with you. The Starrett family’s life forever changes when a man named Shane rides out of the great glowing West and up to their farm in 1889. Young Bob Starrett is entranced by this stoic stranger who brings a new energy to his family. Shane stays on as a farmhand, but his past remains a mystery. Many folks in their small Wyoming valley are suspicious of Shane, and make it known that he is not welcome. But dangerous as Shane may seem, he is a staunch friend to the Starretts—and when a powerful neighboring rancher tries to drive them out of their homestead, Shane becomes entangled in the deadly feud. This classic Western, originally published in 1949, is a profoundly moving story of the influence of a singular character on one boy’s life.

Schaefer, Jack Warner was born on November 19, 1907 in Cleveland. Son of Carl Walter and Minnie Luella (Hively) Schaefer.
He graduated from Oberlin College in 1929 with a major in English. He attended graduate school at Columbia University from 1929-1930, but left without completing his Master of Arts degree.
His most famous work is Shane, which was made into a critically acclaimed movie, and the short story "Stubby Pringle"s Christmas" (1964). He then went to work for the United Press. In his long career as a journalist, he would hold editorial positions at many eastern publications.
Schaefer"s first success as a novelist came in 1949 with his memorable novel Shane, set in Wyoming.
Few realized that Schaefer himself had never been anywhere near the west. Nevertheless, he continued writing successful westerns, selling his home in Connecticut and moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1955.
He died of heart failure in Santa Fe in 1991. Schaefer"s novel Monte Walsh was made into a movie in 1970, with Lee Marvin in the title role, and again in 2003 as a television movie starring Tom Selleck.
Shane was also made into a movie and a series.
