(Excerpt from Chapter One: Virginia was barely beginning t...)
Excerpt from Chapter One: Virginia was barely beginning to recover from the trauma of the American Revolution when a group of officers who had served in that conflict met in Fredericksburg on October 6, 1783 to establish the Virginia Society of the Cincinnati. The Society had been been founded in New York State the preceding May, with George Washington as its first President-General. It was the first patriotic society to be organized in this country. The officers who constituted the organization at that time returned to their respective states and established state societies. This book has the history of the Virginia chapter, it's by-laws and a list of members.
