(Comedian Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect, Bridesmaids) stars ...)
Comedian Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect, Bridesmaids) stars in this comedy series about three nerdy friends on their "funcomfortable" quest to have fun on Friday nights - even if it kills them. Things may not go exactly as planned, but at least they venture out of the nest, right? From Conan O'Brien's Conaco Productions and executive producer John Riggi (30 Rock, Will & Grace), it's Super Fun Night.
Rebel Wilson is an Australian comedic actress who became known for playing Kristen Wiig's roommate in Bridesmaids. Her portrayal of Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect earned her an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance.
Background
Ethnicity:
Wilson's ancestors were from England, Ireland and Wales.
Rebel Melanie Elizabeth Wilson was born on March 2, 1980, in Sydney, Australia. Rebel was born Melanie Elisabeth Bownds. It is not clear if “Rebel” was part of her birth name. Rebel has said that her parents gave her the name “Rebel” after a girl who sang at their wedding. Her parents are professional dog handlers. She was raised in Kenthurst, Parramatta and Castle Hill along with her three siblings, Liberty, Ryot, and Annachi Wilson. Liberty and Ryot appeared on the first season of The Amazing Race Australia in 2011, where they were the first team eliminated. Wilson has stated that her great-aunt was Lillian Bounds, who was married to Walt Disney until his death in 1966.
Rebel Wilson has said that her ancestors include “Bad Irish people that were sent to Australia” (as convicts).
Education
As a child, Rebel Wilson joined Tara Anglican School for Girls and she completed her secondary education from there in 1997. Wilson was very studious at school and often spent her lunchtimes studying in the library. "Every lunchtime, like a total Nigel dork, I was in that library just sitting by myself with no friends," she said. But in Grade 12 her hard work paid off, with Wilson scoring a near-perfect result of 99.3 percent on her Higher School Certificate (HSC). "She worked incredibly hard, but see Rebel, she is one of those people who whatever she sets her mind to, she just works really hard at it," her mother Sue said.
For the sake of her fostering interest in acting, Wilson attended the University of New South Wales. There, she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Arts (Theatre and Performance Studies) along with a Bachelor’s degree in Law Studies during the year of 2009.
Wilson discovered her passion for acting though when as an Australian youth ambassador for Rotary International she was sent to South Africa where she contracted malaria and had hallucinations that she was an actress winning an Academy Award. She decided these hallucinations were a sign.
Wilson studied acting at the Australian Theatre for Young People. Later, she went to New York on a scholarship, for further training.
After completing her studies at the Australian Theatre for Young People, Rebel Wilson went to New York, on a scholarship funded by Nicole Kidman. After gaining public attention for her stage works, she began her career on television as Toula on the SBS series Pizza and as an assortment of characters such as Lucy, Fat Mandi, and Karla Bangs on another sketch comedy series, The Wedge. Her first film was Fat Pizza, released in 2003, which was based upon the same TV series. Rebel showed even more creativity when she created, wrote, produced and starred in the musical comedy series Bogan Pride that aired on SBS One. Over the next few years, she appeared in several other TV shows, such as Monster House (2006), City Homicide (2009), and Rules of Engagement (2010).
After a cameo in the action flick Ghost Rider (2007) with Nicolas Cage, she moved to the United States and was signed to William Morris Endeavor. In 2008, Rebel Wilson appeared in Monster House, an Australian comedy series, which was broadcast on the Nine Network. Starring actors, such as Celia Ireland, Travis Cotton, Rebel Wilson, and Jody Kennedy, the series aired for only one season, covering ten episodes.
Wilson got her United States breakthrough role in the 2011 Judd Apatow comedy Bridesmaids. She auditioned for the Melissa McCarthy role but got the part of Kristen Wiig's hellish roommate instead. Wilson was an absolute scene-stealer with antics like explaining how she mistook her roommate's diary for a "sad handwritten book."
In 2012, Wilson appeared in films, such as Struck By Lightning a comedy-drama, directed by Brian Dannelly, and Pitch Perfect, a musical comedy film, directed by Jason Moore.
On August 2011, Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter reported that Rebel would become the first person cast in the new comedy Pitch Perfect (2012). For her performance as Fat Amy in the movie, she received much critical praise and from this, she received several nominations, including Best Supporting Actress from the San Diego Film Critics Society and Best Actress in a Comedy from the Broadcast Film Critics Association. The success of the comedy fueled the production of its sequels, with Wilson reprising her role of Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect 2 in 2015 and the franchise's third installment in 2017.
Wilson played a voice role in the popular animated adventure film ‘Ice Age: Continental Drift’. The film, which was the fourth installment of the Ice Age series, was released on 13 July 2012. Directed by Steve Martino and Michael Thurmeier, the film was a huge commercial success and became the highest grossing animated film of the year. It received mostly mixed reviews. A sequel ‘Ice Age: Collision Course’, was released in July 2016. Based on the film, a game was also released, where Wilson reprised her role.
Wilson appeared alongside Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson in the action comedy Pain & Gain in 2013. She also signed on to be a voice in Kung Fu Panda 3 with co-stars Jack Black and Angelina Jolie. And her charisma on the silver screen led to hosting at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards.
Wilson's ability to keep up with A-list actors in her back-to-back roles on film didn't go unnoticed. In October of 2013, she took on the lead role in the series Super Fun Night, with Conan O'Brien acting as the executive producer. After a rocky start - the pilot episode was scrapped after it received unfavorable reviews, which led to the show premiering with its second episode - the series premiere garnered more than 8 million viewers and was the No. 2 show among 18-49-year-olds for the night. However, the series didn't hold up with critics or audiences as it continued, and it was canceled at the end of the season.
In 2014, Wilson appeared in another comedic role as Tilly, a museum security guard in Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.
Wilson appeared in the 2015 comedy film ‘Pitch Perfect 2’, which was a sequel to the 2012 film ‘Pitch Perfect’. Directed by Elizabeth Banks, the film starred actors Anna Kendrick, Hailee Steinfeld, Britanny Snow, and Skylar Astin in addition to Rebel Wilson. The film received mostly positive reviews. It was also a commercial success and won several awards such as the Billboard Music Awards, and the People’s Choice Awards.
Wilson went on to star in the 2016 comedy How to Be Single with Leslie Mann and Dakota Johnson. She also teamed up with comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, Isla Fisher and Penelope Cruz for The Brothers Grimsby that year. She was seen in the 2016 movies Grimsby, directed by Louis Letterier, and Absolutely Famous: The Movie, directed by Mandie Fletcher.
In early 2019, Wilson starred in Isn't It Romantic as an architect who wakes up to find herself stuck in a storyline straight out of the romantic-comedy handbook. Along with her Pitch Perfect colleague Adam DeVine, the film featured Liam Hemsworth and Priyanka Chopra as the outrageously beautiful love interests.
Wilson has also been involved in behind-the-scenes efforts by way of her Camp Sugar Productions. Its first project was a remake of the 1988 Steve Martin-Michael Caine comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, to be rebranded The Hustle and released in May 2019, with Wilson and Anne Hathaway in starring roles.
Wilson will appear in a remake of Private Benjamin. She has also been cast in The Social Life alongside Amanda Seyfried, and she will appear in Taika Waititi's dark comedy-drama Jojo Rabbit as Fraulein Rahm. Wilson will produce and star in a feature film adaptation of the Image Comics comic book Crowded. She will also star in the musical film Cats as Jennyanydots.
Wilson isn't just an actress; she could be a legal eagle. She attended law school as a backup plan for performing. In addition, she served as a Jenny Craig spokesperson in Australia and launched a cheeky plus-sized fashion line in 2013. Her label, Fat Mandi, first consisted of T-shirts with cupcakes and doughnuts strategically placed across the wearer's chest. In 2015, Wilson collaborated with Torrid stores to launch another plus-sized clothing line.

Views
In July 2015, Wilson stated her support for stricter American gun laws following the 2015 Lafayette shooting, stating, "I don't like getting political but America you really have to follow Australia's example re gun laws. I don't remember a mass shooting in Australia since they overhauled the gun laws. It seems like every week in America there's a shooting. I just want people to be safe, especially people that are doing one of my favorite things in the world - going out to the movies to have fun."
Quotations:
"My family keeps me pretty grounded. Like if I try anything diva, they're like, "Oh shut up. Go and do the dishwasher."
"It took people who have the power to say yes to pull the trigger for me. Since then, I think it's been easier; I'm not like anybody else out there, with my skills and abilities and looks.
"I love talking in an American accent. Even though it hurts my face after a few hours."
"Even when I'm playing someone named Fat Amy, it's all about confidence and attitude."
Personality
Around the time of Pitch Perfect 2's release, Wilson found herself in the middle of a media maelstrom over her age. An Australian publication presented information that she was, in fact, a few years older than she claimed to be. Her real birth date was later confirmed to be March 2, 1980, which meant she was actually 35 years old, according to People magazine. Wilson took to Twitter to make light of the controversy, writing "I'm actually a 100 year old mermaid formerly known as CC Chalice."
However, Wilson took the series of articles - which were run by Bauer Media - seriously, as they claimed she had lied about her age and other biographical information. She sued the media company for defamation, saying it portrayed her as a "serial liar" and consequently prevented her from getting roles in Hollywood.
In 2017 Wilson won her suit and was granted $4.5 million in damages, making her case the most successful defamation case in Australia. However, Bauer Media appealed and in June 2018 the appeals court sided with the company, which argued that Wilson had no proof her fiscal livelihood actually suffered as a result of the articles. The court reduced the compensation of the damage to $600K. Regardless of the slight turn of events, Wilson said she felt vindicated and planned on giving the money to charity.
Wilson has sponsored a child from Tanzania, 17-year-old Winnie, for eight years.

Connections
In 2012, Rebel Wilson got into a relationship with Matt Lucas, her co-star in the film Bridesmaids. Though they eventually broke up, they lived together for three years till 2015.
Admittedly private about her personal life, then-35-year-old Rebel Wilson's fans were abuzz when she posted now-deleted selfies of her boyfriend, filmmaker Mickey Gooch Jr., confirming the two were an item in May of 2015. "Rebel Wilson is off the market, Bella Bitches," Us Weekly declared, reporting that the pair were spotted in Los Angeles, New York City and Ibiza. But the couple split just four months later, just as Gooch was shooting scenes for Wilson's How To Be Single (2016) - where he would play her date.
