(American teen comedy-drama television series created by P...)
American teen comedy-drama television series created by Paul Feig and executive-produced by Judd Apatow that aired on NBC during the 1999 - 2000 television season. The show follows gifted high schooler Lindsay Weir, who befriends a gang of slacker "freaks", and her younger brother Sam, as he and his geek friends navigate high school.
Seth Rogen is a Canadian-American actor, comedian, director, producer, and writer. Rogen shot to fame in television and film, collaborating several times with director Judd Apatow.
Background
Ethnicity:
Rogen's father is American and his mother is Canadian. He has described his parents as “radical Jewish socialists.” At least some of his ancestors were Russian Jews.
Seth Rogen was born on April 15, 1982, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, to Sandy (née Belogus), a social worker, and Mark Rogen, who worked for non-profit organizations and as an assistant director of the Workmen's Circle Jewish fraternal organization. Since Rogen's father is American, he has American citizenship by birth, though the actor has stated: "I definitely associate with being Canadian much more than being American" because he grew up in Canada. He has one older sister, Danya, who is a social worker.
Education
Rogen attended a Talmud Torah school and Point Grey Secondary School, incorporating many of his classmates into his writing. He was also known for the stand-up comedy he performed at Camp Miriam, a Habonim Dror camp. Rogen got his start in show business at age 13 after signing up for a comedy class. With his trademark deadpan humor, he placed second in the Vancouver Amateur Comedy Contest at 16, then headed south of the border to continue stand-up and acting. However, with a career in comedy starting to bloom, he never graduated from high school.
As a child, Rogen did not want to pursue any career other than comedy. His early comedy routines involved jokes about his bar mitzvah, his grandparents, and his camp counselors. As a teenager, Seth Rogen started performing stand-up comedy at functions. When he was 16 his father lost his job and his mother quit hers. The family was facing financial troubles and Seth helped to pay the bills with his earnings as a stand-up comedian.
Rogen left high school when a casting call landed him a part in director Judd Apatow's new prime-time comedy-drama Freaks and Geeks (1999-2000). He played Ken, a burnout with a deadpan sense of humor, in an ensemble of young actors just beginning their careers. Rogen dropped out of high school, began working for Apatow, and relocated with his family to Los Angeles. Rogen paid the bills and had become the main wage earner at just 16. Freaks and Geeks soon became a cult classic, although it was canceled after just one season due to low ratings. Though the show only lasted one season, it was the launching pad for many careers, including Rogen, Apatow, James Franco, and Jason Segel. This early work sharpened Rogen's keen improvisational skills, which he's used on many projects since.
Judd Apatow was impressed by Rogen’s ease in front of the camera and talent for improvisation and in 2001 hired him for a new college-themed sitcom, Undeclared. Rogen also served as a writer on the series, becoming good friends and roommates with its star, fellow Canadian Jay Baruchel. Rogen was originally set to play a fairly popular but nerdy college freshman, but the network did not think he was leading male material. Apatow opted not to go along with the show. When that show met a similar fate as Freaks and Geeks, Rogen, along with childhood friend Evan Goldberg, landed jobs writing for the Sacha Baron Cohen showcase Da Ali G Show.
Although Rogen continued to write for television and film and received small roles in 2001's Donnie Darko and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy in 2004, it was another Judd Apatow enterprise that gave him a career breakthrough. In 2005 he played one of Steve Carell's co-workers in the raunchy-but-sweet comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin, a hit with audiences and critics.
Rogen's exposure increased greatly when he took the lead role in Apatow's Knocked Up (2007), acting opposite Katherine Heigl in an unconventional romantic comedy about a one-night-stand that leads to an unexpected pregnancy. Two years later, he was featured in Apatow's darker comedy-drama Funny People, which starred Adam Sandler as a comedian and cancer victim.
In addition to his acting ability, Rogen's writing and producing skills were evident in Superbad, a 2007 film developed from a script he had co-written with his friend Evan Goldberg at the age of 13. He and Goldberg went on to co-write the action-comedy Pineapple Express (2008), in which Rogen, playing a crime witness, teamed up with fellow Freaks and Geeks alumnus James Franco as his drug dealer.
Rogen's constant presence on movie screens continued with his work in Kevin Smith's Zach and Miri Make a Porno in 2008, the crime spoof Observe and Report in 2009, and the romantic comedy Take This Waltz in 2011. He starred as the titular superhero of the comic-book-based movie The Green Hornet (2011) and was the sidekick to a young cancer patient played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in 2011's 50/50.
Rogen has also lent his deep, scratchy voice to several animated features, including Dr. Seuss's Horton Hears a Who! (2008) Kung Fu Panda (2008) and Paul (2011).
For The Guilt Trip (2012), Rogen teamed up with legendary singer-actress Barbra Streisand in a mother-and-son road-trip movie. In 2013's This is the End, Rogen reunites with fellow actors (and friends) Jonah Hill, James Franco, Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, and others - all playing themselves - in an apocalyptic action-comedy film. In 2014, Rogen starred with Zac Efron in the comedy Neighbors, and he later reprised the role for the 2016 sequel.
Rogen found himself in the headlines in 2014 for his film The Interview, co-starring with friend James Franco. Rogen plays a TV producer and Franco is a talk show host in this action-comedy. Their two characters are recruited by the CIA after they land an interview with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The CIA wants the pair to assassinate the communist dictator.
The film's political plot is played for laughs, but not everyone found it funny. In July 2014, a North Korean official warned there would be retaliation against the United States if the film was released, according to BBC News. Rogen responded to the incident on Twitter, writing "People don't usually wanna kill me for one of my movies until after they've paid 12 bucks for it."
As The Interview's December release date neared, a group of hackers called the Guardians of the Peace launched a cyber attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment, the company behind the film. The group was able to obtain tons of the company's materials, including unreleased films and internal emails, and soon made many of these items available to the public. Threats were also made against any movie theater that agreed to screen the film. The FBI later directly connected the hacking of Sony to the North Korean government.
In the wake of these devastating leaks and theater threats, Sony shelved The Interview. Days later, the company announced the film would be released to a number of indie theaters on Christmas Day. In a statement, Sony's Chairman Michael Lynton said, “We have never given up on releasing The Interview and we’re excited our movie will be in a number of theaters on Christmas Day. At the same time, we are continuing our efforts to secure more platforms and more theaters so that this movie reaches the largest possible audience.”
In 2015 Rogen played Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in the biopic Steve Jobs and later that year starred in the Christmas comedy The Night Before. In 2016 he continued doing voiceover work for animations like Kung Fu Panda 3 and Sausage Party.
The following year, Rogen again joined his longtime buddy and collaborator James Franco for the critically acclaimed The Disaster Artist, which also starred James's younger brother Dave. In 2018 he starred opposite Kristen Bell and Kelsey Grammer in Netflix's comedy Like Father.
Retaining a busy schedule into 2019, Rogen surfaced on the big screen that year in the romantic comedy Long Shot, as a writer drawn into the orbit of a former babysitter and current presidential candidate, played by Charlize Theron. Later that year he was set to voice Pumbaa the warthog in a remake of The Lion King.

Religion
Seth was raised Jewish but appears to hold views closer to Atheism. He loves to make jokes about religion, especially Judaism. He talks about being Jewish in a lot of his jokes, and he usually plays that persona in the movies he acts in.
Politics
Politically, Rogen describes himself as "left-wing".
Views
Rogen has been outspoken about awareness of Alzheimer's disease. No one in his biological family has it but it runs on his wife's side and has affected her mother for several years. "I think until you see it firsthand, it's kind of hard to conceive of how brutal it is," Rogen said to CNN. "Until I saw it, you just don't get kind of how heartbreaking it can be." During the interview, he talked about how he tries to be emotionally supportive and around as much as he can for Miller's mother. Both he and Miller spoke to Larry King for A Larry King Special, Unthinkable: The Alzheimer's Epidemic, which aired in April 2011. Rogen testified about the disease and his charity before the United States Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services on February 26, 2014. Rogen started the Hilarity for Charity movement, to inspire change and raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease among the Millennial Generation. On February 25, 2016, Rogen and Miller were honored with the unite2gether accolade from unite4: humanity for their work promoting awareness and raising money for Alzheimer's research through Hilarity for Charity.
Rogen appeared in a Bud Light commercial celebrating LGBT Pride Month and the Supreme Court of the United States ruling same-sex couples the right to marry.
In June 2018, Rogen was invited by Mitt Romney to speak at a seminar for awareness of Alzheimer's disease hosted by Romney in Park City, Utah. Speaker of the House of Representatives Paul Ryan was in attendance, asking Rogen for a photo after Ryan's children engaged Rogen in conversation. Rogen refused, stating in an interview with Stephen Colbert; "I look over and his kids are standing right there expectantly, clearly fans of mine, and I said, ‘No way, man!’” and telling Ryan “Furthermore, I hate what you’re doing to the country at this moment and I’m counting the days until you no longer have one iota of the power that you currently have.”
On July 3, 2018, Rogen criticized Twitter and its CEO Jack Dorsey, claiming he had a "bizarre need to verify white supremacists." Variety magazine reported that he was "directly in touch" with Dorsey over the issue. Several media outlets, including Fortune, speculated that Rogen was referring to alt-right figure Jason Kessler and the Proud Boys in particular.
Quotations:
"I think Canadian comedy is a little darker in general. To me, 'Kids in the Hall' is just the benchmark, and it's very twisted and absurd."
"I don't preconceive. I've worked with a lot of people who people have told me are super-difficult, and I haven't found them to be difficult at all. I've also worked with people that people have said are easy, and I've hated them."
"I think a very Canadian mentality is one of self-consciousness. Kind of apologizing for yourself and not fully embracing what it is that you are."
"In the best-case scenario and the worst-case scenario, a drama plays to a theatre of silent people. In a comedy, you can really tell when it's not working - it's not a mystery. You don't have to talk to your friends in the parking lot after."

Personality
Though Rogen has penned scripts for both film and television, his comedic stylings tend to rely heavily on improvisational dialogue. Rogen says he prefers improvised dialogue because it captures the essence of real friends spouting jokes. Rogen has described the shock of being thrust into an industry where he is now working alongside the comedic icons he grew up watching, such as Will Ferrell, Owen Wilson, and Jim Carrey. Rogen cites the Adam Sandler album They're All Gonna Laugh at You! (which features Apatow at certain points) as the funniest thing he has ever heard, stating that the track "At A Medium Pace" was the seed for what became his comedic persona. Rogen was also a huge fan of the Da Ali G Show's first season, so it was a shock to suddenly work for Sacha Baron Cohen. Rogen cites the films Porky's and Bachelor Party, in addition to films by Kevin Smith, as inspirations for writing sex comedies.
Seth Rogan has a series of NSFW nude portraits of himself, painted by his best friend James Franco. Franco and Rogen have a very - we'll call it "special;" - kind of friendship, and they've been known to have a bromance of epic proportions. This series is based on a more photorealistic fairly pornographic book of art entitled Seth by Christopher Schulz.
Rogen is an open marijuana user. Rogen and his longtime friend and collaborator Evan Goldberg launched the cannabis company Houseplant in Canada in 2019.
Seth Rogen became the ninth man to grace the cover of Playboy magazine in their March 2009 issue.
