Career

Admitted to Virginia bar 1850. Delegate Democratic National Convention, Cincinnati, 1856. Member United States House of Representatives from Virginia, 35th-36th congresses, 1857-1861.

Delegate Confederate Provisional Congress, 1861. Commissioned brigadier general Confederate States Army, 1862. Led brigade on 500 mile raid into Ohio, 1862.

Led advance guard into Pennsylvania, 1863. Wounded at battles of Gettysburg, 1863, Cloyd’s Mountain, 1864.
