Ramayya received a Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Regional Engineering College (nowadays National Institute of Technology) in 1984. Two years later he earned his Master's degree in Thermal Systems Engineering from Indian Institute of Science. Also in 1991, Ancha was given a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Madras.
Ramayya began his career as a research scholar at Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 1986. Five years later he took a position of a senior project officer and industrial consultant at that institute. In 1993, Ancha became an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Vellore Institute of Technology. Then in 1997, he was appointed an associate professor at that institute. In 1999, Ramayya became a professor at Vellore Institute of Technology. Since 2001 he has been a professor at Jimma Institute of Technology.
Ramayya is a member of the Indian Society for Heat and Mass Transfer, Indian Society for Technical Education, American Chemical Society and New York Academy of Sciences.
