Bacon, Augustus Octavius was born on October 20, 1839 in Bryan Company, Georgia, United States. Son of Review Augustus Octavius and Mary Louisa (Jones) Bacon.

Bachelor of Arts, University of Georgia, 1859, Bachelor of Laws, 1860 (Doctor of Laws, 1909).

Career

Adjunct 9th Georgia Regiment, C.S.A., and captain on general staff. In law practice at Macon, Georgia, since 1866. Presidential elector, 1868.

Member Georgia House of Representatives, 1870-1882, 92, 93 (speaker 1873-1882, except 1875-1876, when was speaker pro tem). Frequently delegate to Democratic State convs. (president 1880); delegate-at-large Democratic National Convention, 1884.

Several times candidate for Democratic nomination for government (within 1 vote of nomination, 1883, when equivalent to election). Elected United States senator, 1894, 1900, 1907. Chairman of Commission Engrossed Bills.
