Bruce was born on September 27, 1949 in Roslyn, New York, United States. He is the son of Bruce David, a telephone engineer and Virginia Marie (Bove) Chilton.
In 1971 Bruce Chilton finished Bard College and got Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1974 Chilton was ordained to ministry in Episcopal Church. The same year Bruce obtained Master of Divinity degree graduating from General Theological Seminary. Moreover, in 1976 he received Doctor of Philosophy degree at Cambridge University in England.
In 1976 Bruce started his career as a lecturer in biblical studies at Sheffield University in Sheffield, England and held the post till 1985, when he started to serve at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. Chilton acted on this position till 1987, when he became a Bernard Iddings Professor of Religion Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, United States. Since 1987 Bruce served as a rector at Church of St. John the Evangelist.
Bruce Chilton founded two academic periodicals, Journal for the Study of the New Testament and The Bulletin for Biblical Research.
Bruce is a Social Democrat.
On July 3, 1982 Chilton married Odile Sevault. They have two children - Samuel Georges Norbert and Henry Edward Albert.
