Carl Franklin Stychin was born on November 1, 1964, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Stychin was educated at the University of Alberta from 1982 till 1985 and graduated from it with distinction. He studied at the University of Toronto from 1985 till 1988, receiving his Bachelor of Laws degree. He then attended Columbia University for two years from 1990, earning his Master of Laws degree.
Stychin began to serve at Keele University as a lecturer in 1992, rising to a senior lecturer in law in 1996, he held the post for two years. He was also a director of postgraduate studies at that university.
Stychin moved to the University of Reading in 1998, holding the position of a professor of Law and Social Theory at the university's School of Law for fourteen years. He served as a head of the School of Law from 2001 to 2003. From that same year, he became a dean of the faculty of Economic and Social Sciences of the University of Reading. Stychin then served as a pro-vice-chancellor of the University of Reading, for three years from 2005.
Stychin joined the City University of London as a professor of Law in 2012. He still holds that post. From 2012 till February 2018 Stychin worked as a dean of The City Law School of the City University of London.
During his career, Stychin has worked as a lecturer at numerous educational institutions, including Macquarie University, the University of Nottingham, King’s College, the University of Warwick, the University of Toronto and Queen’s University. Additionally, he was a guest on British radio programs.
Stychin has conducted researches on law, gender and sexuality. He is the author of three monographs, co-edited three collections, and published numerous articles in the field. In addition, he has longstanding interests in tort law and in law and popular culture. He edited a student 'text and materials' collection on Legal Methods and Systems. He is a contributor of articles and reviews to professional journals, including Feminist Legal Studies, Journal of Law and Society, Anglo-American Law Review, Canadian Journal of Law and Jurisprudence, Law and Sexuality, American Journal of Legal History and Oxford Journal of Legal Studies. Stychin remains the editor of Social & Legal Studies: An International Journal, a position which he has held for many years.
