Charles William Field, American army officer.


Field, Charles William was born on April 6, 1828 in Airy Mount, Woodford County, Kentucky, United States. Son of Willis and Isabella (Buck) Field.


Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1849.


Commissioned Second lieutenant 2d Dragoons, United States Army. Served in New Mexico, Texas, Kansas, 1849-1855. Promoted First lieutenant, 1855.

Instructor cavalry tactics United States Military Academy, 1856. Commissioned captain, 1861, resigned to enter Confederate Army. Commissioned captain Confederate Army, 1861.

Colonel 6th Virginia Cavalry, 1861, brigadier general, 1862. Commanded brigade at Fredericksburg and Seven Day’s battles. Served in battles of Cedar Mountain and 2d Bull Run.

Major general, 1864; present at Appomattox Court House when Lee surrendered. Colonel engrs. Egyptian Army, 1875, inspector general during Abyssinian War. Returned to the United States, 1877.

Doorkeeper United States House of Representatives, 46th Congress, 1878. United States civil engineer, 1881-1885. Superintendent Hot Springs (Arkansas) Indian Reservation, 1885-1889.
