Admitted to bar, 1852. Practiced law in Alabama until 1860. Breckenridge and Lane elector, 1860, and canvassed Alabama with Honorary William L. Yancey.

Entered C. S. army as private. Elected major 3d Alabama regiment, April 1861. Lieutenant colonel, July 1861.

Colonel, June 1862; distinguished in battle. Promoted brigadier general on field at Gettysburg, July 1863. Major general, October 1864.

Wounded 7 times; since the war devoted his time chiefly to journalism. Home: New Bern, North Carolina.
