Hill, Daniel Harvey was born on July 12, 1821 in York District, South Carolina, United States. Son of Solomon and Nancy (Cabeen) Hill.

Education

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1842.

Career

Served as Second lieutenant United States Army in every important battle in Mexican War, 1846-1848. Professor mathematics Washington College, 1849-1854, Davidson (North Carolina) College, 1854-1859. President North Carolina Military Institute, 1859-1861.

Commissioned brigadier general Confederate Army, 1861, major general, 1862, held the pass in Blue Ridge near Boonesboro until Stonewall Jackson had captured Harper’s Ferry and Lee had crossed Potomac River during Maryland. Campaign, 1862; promoted Lieutenant general, 1863, in command of corps under General Braxton Bragg at Battle of Chickamauga. Publisher magazine The Land We Love, 1866-1877.

President U. Arkansas, 1877-1884. Directed Georgia Military College, 1885-1889. Author: A Consideration of the Sermon on the Mount, 1858.
