Darlene Ruth Stille was born on April 17, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, United States; the daughter of Theodore E. Stille, a house painter, and Edna Pue (Cook) Stille, a telephone operator.
Darlene Ruth Stille graduated from Taft High School in 1960 and received a Bachelor's in English degree from the University of Illinois in 1965.
Stille began her career in 1967 at Encyclopedia Britannica where she was the production editor till 1968. She was a staff editor at Compton's Encyclopedia and Year Book from 1968 to 1971 and editor at World Book Yearbook and Science Year publications from 1971 to 1978. In 1978 she moved to Science Year to become an associate editor and stayed there until 1991. Later, she became the managing editor at World Book Annuals Editorial Department and then the executive editor. She also served as editor-in-chief of World Book Annuals and Online Services until her retirement in 2002. Darlene also wrote travel articles for Outlines newspaper and later Windy City Times.
Stille’s interest in science is reflected in most, if not all, of her writing. In Extraordinary Women Scientists, she presents a history of women’s role in science as well as biographies of fifty important scientists from various scientific disciplines, including information on women scientists from numerous countries. Her next book for the "Extraordinary People" series is titled Extraordinary Women of Medicine. This time, Stille narrowed her focus to present an overview of a history of medicine as well as highlighting women's achievements in the field of medicine. Like its companion volume, Extraordinary Women of Medicine also includes biographies and covers various ethnic groups, including Americans, African Americans, and Europeans.
In addition to books on science, Stille wrote numerous books for her "Transportation" series, including Airplanes and Trains. In both of these works, she includes information that will be relevant to school-age children who are just beginning to write reports on various subjects. In addition to descriptions of planes and trains, both books also include photographs and a list of sources for further study. Other books by Stille in this series include Helicopters, Blimps, and Trucks.
Stille’s scientific background is once again evident in the books she wrote for the "True Book" series published by the Children’s Press. Included among these is The Circulatory System, a book that presents basic information about the heart, flow of blood, and the function of lungs. As with her other books, Stille includes a glossary as well as a list of resources for more information. Another book is titled The Nervous System. Once again, using simple language and diagrams, Stille explains the interaction between the brain, nerves, and muscles. Other titles by Stille for the "True Book" series include The Wetlands and Tropical Rain Forests. Both follow the familiar, simple format of her earlier books, focusing on presenting basic facts about the topics under discussion, accompanied by photographs and a list of resources for further study.
Earth's solar system is explored in the "Our Galaxy and Beyond" series. Focusing on a single planet, each volume in the series introduces budding scientists to the solar system by describing the distinguishing features of that particular celestial body. The titles also provide historical backgrounds of the first astronomers as well as current NASA missions.
Stille also delved into the oceanic world with the series "I Live in the Ocean". Each title is narrated by an ocean animal who explains their diets, anatomy, and their daily activities.

2004Darlene Stille worked to ensure that Chicagoland area corporations provided equal pay and better working conditions for women.
Quotations: "I became a science writer and editor largely because I could not become a doctor. I started out in pre-med in 1960. Medicine, at that time, was not very open to women—to say the least. One needed strong family support to go forth in that direction. My family was dead-set against the idea."
Darlene Stille was a member of Women Employed and American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Darlene Ruth Stille had a partner - Cynthia Marquard.
