Gaillard, David Du Bose was born on September 4, 1859 in Fulton Physician organization, South Carolina, United States. Son of Samuel Isaac and Susan Richardson (Du Bose) Gaillard.

Education

Educated private country school, Clarendon Company, South Carolina., and Mount Zion School, Winnsboro, South Carolina., 1872-1874. Appointed from South Carolina. and graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1884, Engineer School of Application, 1887.

Career

Appointed Second lieutenant engrs., June 15, 1884. First lieutenant, October 27, 1887. Captain, October 25, 1895.

Colonel 3d United States.V. engrs., June 7, 1898. Honorary mustered out, May 17, 1899. Major, April 23, 1904.

Lieutenant colonel, April 11, 1909. Assistant to Captain W. M. Black, and in charge various surveys and harbor improvements at St. Augustine and Tampa and Withlacoochee River, Florida, 1887-1891. Member International Boundary Commission, United States and Mexico, 1891-1894.

In charge Washington Aqueduct, etc., 1895-1898. On staff Major General J. F. Wade, United States.V., April-June, 1898. Served in the United States and Cuba, June 1898-May 1899.

Chief engineer Department of Santa Clara, Cuba, February-April 1899. Assistant to engineer commissioner of District of Columbia, 1899-1901. In charge all river and harbor improvement of Lake Superior, 1901-1903.

Member general staff corps and engineer officer Northern Division, 1903-1904. On duty at Army War College, 1904-1906. Chief military information division, army of Cuban pacification at Marianao, Cuba, October 1906-February 1907.

Member Isthmian Canal Common. and director Panama Railroad Company, March 16, since 1907. Supervising engineer in charge of dredging in harbors, building breakwaters, etc., April 1, 1907-July 1, 1908. Division engineer Central Division, Gatun to Pedro Miguel, July 1, since 1908.
