Background

Jones, David Rumph was born on April 5, 1825 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina, United States. Son of Donald Bruce and Mary (Rumph) Jones.

Education

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1846.

Career

Served as Second lieutenant 2d Infantry, United States Army during Mexican War. Brevetted First lieutenant for bravery at battles of Contreras, Churubusco, 1852. Served in Adjunct General’s Department on Pacific Coast, also St. Louis.

Commissioned major Confederate Army, chief of staff to Gen Beauregard besieging Fort Sumter, 1861. Assigned to command 3d brigade in Army of Potomac. Brigadier general commanding brigade in Battle of Bull Run, 1861.

Commissioned major general, 1862. Participated in Battle of Fair Oaks, 1862. Fought under Longstreet at 2d Battle of Bull Run, Battle of Antietam.
