Wolf received a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University in 1961. A year later he earned his Master of Science degree from the same university. In 1967, Don was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Washington.
Wolf began his career as a research fellow at the University of Geneva in 1967. A year later he took the same position at the University of California, Davis. Then in 1971, Don became an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Also he served as an associate professor at the same university from 1975 to 1981.
In 1981, Wolf was appointed a professor at the University of Texas. Since 1986 he has been a professor at Oregon Health and Science University. Also since 1986 Don has been working as a senior scientist at Oregon National Primate Research Center.
