Kinney was born on April 25, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan, United States; the daughter of Ralph Conover Getsinger and Edith Lashbrook.
Kinney received a Bachelor of Arts from Wellesley College in 1947. Twenty five years later she earned her Master of Arts degree from Sarah Lawrence College.
Kinney began her career as a reporter of Life Magazine in 1949. Thirteen years later she took the same position at Time/Life Books. Then in 1974, Doris became a press officer at New York University.
In 1978, she was appointed an associate editor for GEO Magazine and Life Magazine in 1981, where she worked until 1997. She is a freelance editor.
On February 16, 1952 Doris Kinney married Harrison B. Kinney, with whom she divorced in August 1974. They have four children.
