In 1960 Earl received Bachelor of Arts at University of Rochester. Yhe he earned Master of Arts at Syracuse University in 1963, and got Doctor of Philosophy at University of Wisconsin - Madison in 1971.

In 1964 - 1971 he was an ordinary instructor, then he became an assistant professor in 1971. After that, he was appointed associate professor in 1987, and held that post until 1991.
