Background

O’Neal, Edward Ashbury was born on September 21, 1818 in Madison County, Alabama, United States. Son of Edward and Rebecca (Wheat) O’N.

Education

Graduate La Grange College, 1836.

Career

Admitted to Alabama bar, 1840. Solicitor 4th district Alabama, 1841-1845. One of leaders of secession in Northern Alabama.

Commissioned major 9th Alabama Infantry, Confederate Army, 1861, lieutenant colonel, 1861. Promoted to colonel, assigned to 26th Alabama Infantry, 1862. Fought in battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.

Acted as brig.-general, 1864-1865. Leader Democratic party in N. Alabama during reconstruction period. Member Alabama Constitutional Convention, 1875.

Governor Alabama, 1882-1886, responsible for educational and prison reform, establishing normal schools, board convict insps.
