Brett was born on December 5, 1944 in Oceanport, New Jersey, United States; the son of Edward Christopher Brett and Marion Tracy Brett.
Brett received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola University in 1967. Six years later he earned his Master of Arts degree from Louisiana State University. Also in 1979, Edward was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Rutgers University.
Brett served in the United States Navy from 1967 to 1970. In 1981, he began his career as an assistant professor of history Santa Fe College. Since 1984 Edward has been a professor and chairman of history department at La Roche College.
