Background

Morse, Edwin Kirtland was born on July 3, 1856 in Poland, Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. Son of Henry Kirtland and Mary A. (Lynn) Morse.

Education

Bachelor of Arts, Yale, 1881.

Career

In various departments of brother’s bridge works at Youngstown, O., and general agent for the company at Chicago, to 1887. Went to Sydney, Australia, 1887, and contracted for erection of superstructure, under firm head of Ryland & Morse, Hawkesbury Bridge, at Dangar Island (7 spans, 415 foot each, the largest bridge in the southern hemisphere). Returned to Pittsburgh, 1889.

Construction engineering since 1892. Built substructures for Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh R.R. Bridge, and Carnegie’s Railroad, both across Allegheny River. Foundations or hot metal bridges at Port Perry and Homesteao, across Monongahela River for Carnegie Steel Company, substructures for Jones & Laughlin Steel Company’s bridge across Monongahela River.

3 suspension bridges across Ohio River with channel spans 700 to 800 foot each. Consulting engineer, chairman engineer committee of Flood Commission Transit commissioner for city of Pittsburgh, 1916-1920. Construction engineering City of Pittsburgh for study of flood control, wharf walls and river terminals.
