Danien was born on July 17, 1929 in New York City, New York, United States.
Danien received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982. Seven years later she earned her Master of Arts degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1998 from the same university.
Danien began her career as an events coordinator at Penn Museum in 1981 and held the position for eight years. In 1983, she founded the Museum’s annual "Maya Weekend". Since 1998 Elin has been a research associate and volunteer at Penn Museum.
