Elizabeth Dorothea Dipple was born on May 8, 1937 in Brodhagen, Ontario, Canada. Daughter of Frederick and Sybilla Katherine (Schmidt) Dipple.
Elizabeth received a bachelor's degree (with honors) from the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada in 1959. Then she gained a Master of Arts from Johns Hopkins University in 1961. In 1963 she earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Johns Hopkins University.
Elizabeth began her career at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1963 as an assistant professor. She became an associate professor in 1969, then moved on to Northwestern University in the same capacity in 1971. She wrote several books, including "Plot", "Unsolvable Plot", "The Fore Conceit of Sidney’s Ecologues", and "Iris Murdock: Work for the Spirit".
