Erhard Siegfried Gerstenberger was born on June 20, 1932, in Rheinhausen, Germany. He is the son of Fritz Ewald Gerstenberger, a coal miner, and Anna Helene Rosa (Kreps) Gerstenberger.
Gerstenberger earned his bachelor's degree at the United Church Rhine Country in 1957. He became a Master of Sacred Theology at Yale Divinity School three years later. One more year later he received his Doctor of Theology degree at Bonn University. Finally, in 1971, Gerstenberger obtained a Doctor Habilitatus degree at Heidelberg University.
Gerstenberger started his career at the Yale University, where he began as an instructor, later holding the position of an assistant professor from 1962 to 1964. He then moved to the Protestant Reformed church in Duesselforf, Germany, where he was appointed as a pastor for ten years from 1965.
During the period of time 1975-1981, Gerstenberger served at the Escola Superior de Teologia at Sao Leopoldo, Brazil, as a professor of Old Testament. Beginning from 1985 he worked at the University of Marburg as a professor of Old Testament. As an educator, he tried to stimulate the intellectual confrontation with liberation theology in German theology and organized a student exchange with Sao Leopoldo. After his retirement in 1997, Gerstenberger continued for the reception of liberation theology, as a co-initiator of a liberation theological reading circle at the University of Marburg.
Concerning Gerstenberger's writings, his first book titled Suffering, was published in 1980, next year came Woman and Man, a book Psalms 1: With an Introduction to Cultic Poetry was issued in 1988, Leviticus: A Commentary was published in 1996 and a book Yahweh the Patriarch was published the same year. The next book Psalms 2 and Lamentations was issued in 2001. With his study of theology and subsequent pastoral and teaching commitments, writing focused on professional items and themes. Gerstenberger never felt committed exclusively to scholarly discussion, but rather to a general readership. Theology deals with matters of ultimate concern, and along that line, he is writing for anybody of like interest, in German, English and Portuguese.
