Background

Kernan, Francis Joseph was born on October 19, 1859 in Jacksonville, Florida, United States. Son of John A. and Elizabeth C. (Kernan) Kernan.

Education

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1881. Army War. College, 1914.

Career

Commissioned Second lieutenant 21st Infantry, June 11, 1881. Promoted through grades to brigadier general, March 23, 1917. Major general N.A., August 5, 1917.

Major general Regular Army, October 14, 1919. On staff General MacArthur in the Philippines, 1898. Judge advocate Department Santa Clara, Cuba, and at Cienfuegos, 1899.

Again aide to General MacArthur in P.I., 1900-1903. Member General Staff Corps, Washington, District of Columbia, 1905-1909. In P.I., 1909; commanded 8th Infantry Brigade, El Paso, Texas, April 1917.

Acting assistant chief of staff, May-August 1917, and drew up official instructions for General Pershing (approved by Secretary of War Baker and President Wilson). Appointed commander Camp Wheeler, Macon, Georgia, September 1917. Organized and commanded Service of Supply in France, November 30, 1917-July 28, 1918.
