Mapp was born on October 12, 1910 in Atlanta, United States; the son of Thaddeus Henry Mapp and Willie Anne (Johnson) Mapp.
Mapp received a Bachelor of Science degree from Morehouse College in 1932. Two years later he earned his Master of Science degree from Atlanta University (nowadays Clark Atlanta University). In 1942, Frederick was given a Master of Arts degree from Harvard University. In 1950, he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Chicago.
Mapp began his career as a teacher at Washington High School in 1933 and had held the position for seven years. In 1944, he took a position of an associate professor at Knoxville College, where he worked until 1946. Frederick served as a lecturer at Roosevelt College from 1948 to 1950.
In 1951, he became a professor at Tennessee State University. Then in 1952, Mapp held a position of a professor of biology at Morehouse College, where he served until his retirement officially in 1975. He continued to teach until 2000. Also Frederick was a chairman of biology department at Morehouse College from 1962 to 1973.
Mapp is a member of Omega Psi Phi, Sigma Xi and Phi Beta Kappa.
On March 31, 1963 Frederick Mapp married Betty Elizabeth Lewis. They have two stepchildren, five step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
