What do rabbis have to say about intermarriage? Nearly all Jews have an opinion and all Jews have a stake concerning intermarriage. Each member of the tribe is considered precious and irreplaceable. Passions about intermarriage, debates about how to prevent it or reap benefits from its consequences have at their core a genuine concern about group survival.

Jews have always resembled the peoples among whom they live, whether in Africa, Asia, or Europe. Why should American Jews be an exception? In a land where racial and ethnic boundaries are becoming increasingly blurred, the American Jewish community is also shifting.

School textbooks in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and elsewhere in the Arab and Muslim worlds are filled with anti-Western and anti-Israel propaganda. Most readers will be shocked to discover that history and geography textbooks widely used in America's elementary and secondary classrooms contain some of the very same inaccuracies about Jews, Judaism, and Israel.

In the name of academic freedom, the core values of higher education, honest scholarship, unbiased research, and diversity of thought and person, have been corrupted by an academy more interested in preserving its privileges than in protecting its own integrity.

Gary Allan Tobin was born on July 26, 1949, in St. Louis, Missouri. He was the son of Arnold Tobin, a high school teacher, and Estelle Tobin, a homemaker.
Tobin received a Bachelor in History, at Washington University, in 1971. In 1975, he also received Doctor of Philosophy in City and Regional Planning, at the University of California, Berkeley.
From 1975 to 1984, Tobin worked as a director of University College Urban Administration Program at Washington University, in St. Louis, Missouri, and then, from 1978 to 1984, he was an assistant professor there, and an assistant professor of Jewish studies, from 1981 to 1984.
Tobin also was an associate professor of Jewish studies and social welfare at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, from 1984 to 1985, director of Maurice and Marilyn Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies from 1986 to 1998, and director of Institute for Community and Religion from 1994 to 1998.
In 1998, Tobin became a president of Institute for Jewish and Community Research in San Francisco, California. The same year, he became a director of Leonard and Madlyn Abramson Program in Jewish Policy Research at Center for Policy Options at the University of Judaism.
Gary Tobin conducted a study of racial and ethnic diversity in the Jewish community at the Institute for Jewish and Community Research. Currently, the Institute is involved in research about Jewish foundations, some of the most rapidly growing institutions in Jewish life. The influence of Jewish foundations is changing the landscape of Jewish philanthropy and Jewish society. Tobin was also engaged in research, model building, and evaluation of leadership development programs in the Jewish community. The critical need for professional and lay leadership was the primary focus of his work.

1988In all his work, Dr. Tobin challenged the status quo of institutions for which he cared deeply yet always believed could be better. Whether it was the Jewish federation system, American academia, or the State of Israel, Dr. Tobin was never afraid to challenge and provoke, always expecting better and more. He believed the greatest expressions of affection came not through blind praise but through thoughtful criticism and unlimited optimism for the things that meant the most to him.
At his last Passover Seder, Dr. Tobin reminded his family that the Jewish people entered the Promised Land without their leader Moses.
Gary Tobin was known as a wise community leader, loving husband, and father.
Dr. Tobin worked tirelessly to coach his team of colleagues at IJCR. He wanted his work to live be beyond him, not for the sake of his own legacy but for the sake of the greater good he always pursued. The Institute for Jewish & Community Research will continue to advance his visionary research.
On August 18, 1991, Tobin married Diane Kaufmann. The couple had six children, Adam, Amy, Sarah, Aryeh, Mia, Jonah.
