Settled at Worcester and practiced law. City attorney, 1860; president trustees of city library. Member Massachusetts House of Representatives, 1852.

State senator, 1857; member Congress, 1869-1877. One of mgrs. on behalf of House in Belknap impeachment trial, 1876. Member electoral commission, 1876.
