Direct descendant of Carter Braxton, one of signers of the Declaration of Independence. Bachelor of Arts, Richmond College, Virginia, 1881. University of Virginia.

Graduate Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky, 1886. Attended lectures University of Rome (Italy). Doctor of Divinity, Mercer U., Georgia, 1894.

Career

Ordained Baptist ministry, 1886. Pastor Fairmont, Mount Shiloh, Mount Plain, Virginia, 1886-1887, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, 1887-1889. Associate pastor 1st Church, Baltimore, 1889-1891.

Pastor 1st Church, Macon, Georgia, 1891-1894, Liberty and Hebron, Appomattox County, Virginia, 1894-1903, Enon and Troutville, 1903-1940. Professor of English Bible, Hollins College, 1903-1928, resident chaplain, 1903-1933, emeritus since 1933. Preached his first sermon in Rome, Italy, 1882, in Italian.
