George C. Herring was born on May 23, 1936, in Blacksburg, Virginia, the United States, to George C. and Gordon (Saunders) Herring.
Herring attended Roanoke College and received a bachelor's degree in 1957. He then went to the University of Virginia where he received a Master of Arts degree in 1962 and a Ph.D. in 1965.
George C. Herring is Alumni Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Kentucky. He joined the University of Kentucky faculty in 1969 after four years at Ohio University. At the University of Kentucky, he taught classes at all levels, from introductory survey courses in U.S. history to graduate seminars. He directed the work of thirty-five doctoral students and more than fifty Master of Arts students.
A specialist in the history of U.S. foreign relations, his writing has focused on the Vietnam War and includes most importantly, “America’s Longest War: The United States and Vietnam, 1950-1975,” the fifth edition of which was published in 2013.
