( Originally published in 1884, this classic remains an e...)
Originally published in 1884, this classic remains an excellent reference on the history of this complex and charismatic segment of the state's citizenry. "'What is a Creole?' Even in Louisiana, the question would be variously answered." Despite this admission, the author ably addresses the query with precision and aplomb. In this case, he is writing about the white descendants of the early French and Spanish immigrants born in the New World. Originally published in 1884, Creoles of Louisiana remains an excellent reference on the history of this complex and charismatic segment of the state's population. From the early days of "The First Creoles" through the trying times of "The Battle of New Orleans" and "The Great Epidemic" and on to "Brighter Skies," the chapters chronicle the Creoles' rich history in the Pelican State. No examination of the people would be complete without an exploration of their home. In "The Creoles' City," New Orleans emerges as a town carved out of the wilderness of the bayou . . . a town of tremendous potential and opportunity. The Creoles seized it, and, together, city and citizens flourished.

(The main road to wealth in New Orleans has long been Caro...)
The main road to wealth in New Orleans has long been Carondelet street. There you see the most alert faces; noses—it seems to one—with more and sharper edge, and eyes smaller and brighter and with less distance between them than one notices in other streets. It is there that the stock and bond brokers hurry to and fro and run together promiscuously—the cunning and the simple, the headlong and the wary—at the four clanging strokes of the Stock Exchange gong. There rises the tall façade of the Cotton Exchange. Looking in from the sidewalk as you pass, you see its main hall, thronged but decorous, the quiet engine-room of the surrounding city’s most far-reaching occupation, and at the hall’s farther end you descry the “Future Room,” and hear the unearthly ramping and bellowing of the bulls and bears. Up and down the street, on either hand, are the ship-brokers and insurers, and in the upper stories foreign consuls among a multitude of lawyers and notaries.

(Excerpt from The Silent South: Together With the Freedman...)
Excerpt from The Silent South: Together With the Freedman's Case in Equity and the Convict Lease System The greatest social problem before the American people to-day is, as it has been for a hundred years, the presence among us of the negro. No comparable entanglement was ever drawn round itself by any other modern nation with so serene a disregard of its ultimate issue, or with a more distinct national responsibility. The African slave was brought here by cruel force, and with everybody's consent except his own. Everywhere the practice was favored as a measure of common aggrandizement. When a few men and women protested, they were mobbed in the public interest, with the public consent. There rests, therefore, a moral responsibility on the whole nation never to lose sight of the results of African-American slavery until they cease to work mischief and injustice. It is true these responsibilities may not fall everywhere with the same weight; but they are nowhere entirely removed. The original seed of trouble was sown with the full knowledge and consent of the nation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The original seed of trouble was sown with the full knowledge and consent of the nation. The nation was to blame; and so long as evils spring from it, their correction must be the nation's duty. The late Southern slave has within two decades risen from slavery to freedom, from freedom to citizenship, passed on into political ascendency, and fallen again from that eminence. The amended Constitution holds him up in his new political rights as well as a mere constitution can. On the other hand, certain enactments of Congress, trying to reach further, have lately been made void by the highest court of the nation. And another thing has happened. The popular mind in the old free States, weary of strife at arm's length, bewildered by its complications, vexed by many a blunder, eager to turn to the cure of other evils, and even...

Revealing historical tales of the Southern mystique., “From various necessities of the case I am sometimes the story-teller, and sometimes, in the reader’s interest, have to abridge; but I add no fact and trim naught of value away. . . . In time, place, circumstance, in every essential feature, I give them as I got them―strange stories that truly happened, all partly, some wholly, in Louisiana.” ―George W. Cable Featuring seven factual accounts of life and history in the area, this compilation includes tales of French nuns, haunted houses, and even a Union woman trapped behind Civil War battle lines. Cable brings together all the unusual and unique aspects of New Orleans and the South in this literary collection.

"[...] The condition that required the delivery of the original manuscript, written over sixty years before, was not so easily met. First came the assurance that its spelling was hideous, its writing bad and dimmed by time, and the sheets tattered and torn. Later followed the disclosure that an aged and infirm mother of the grandmother owned it, and that she had some time before compelled its return to the private drawer from which the relic-loving daughter had abstracted it. Still later came a letter saying that since the attorney was so relentlessly exacting, she[...]".

"[...]other man I know. Leonard will have a shining career, but it will be in politics." "I tried to dissuade him," broke in the daughter, "till I was ashamed." "In politics," continued Mrs. Morris,—"and Northern politics, Isabel. Arthur's will be in the church!" "Yes," said the other, but her whole attention was within the fence at their side, where a rough stile, made in boyhood days by the two brothers and Leonard, led over into the garden. She sprang up. "Let's go, mother; he's coming!" "Who, my child?" "Both! Come, dear, come quickly! Oh, I don't know why we ever came out at all!"[...]".
