Germain GARNIER, French economist. Created Count, 1804; President, Napoleonic Senate, 1809-1811; Member, Royal Council of State, 1814; created Marauis.
GARNIER, Germain was born in 1754.
French translator of Smith’s Wealth of Nations, who emphasised the elements in Smith sympathetic to physiocracy and played down Smith’s views on industrialisation. This version of Smith was heartily rejected by Say and his followers, who can be seen as reacting against Gamier almost as much as in favour of Smith. His political career revealed considerable powers of adaptation to the dominant trend of the day.
