Glenn Herbert was born on September 25, 1932 in Toronto, Canada. The son of Russell Herbert and Florence (Greig) Gould.
Glenn Herbert Gould was a student at Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto, 1943-1952.
After his American debut concerts in Washington, D.C., and New York City in early 1955, Glenn Herbert Gould was immediately signed to a contract with the recording company Columbia Masterworks. His first album for the company acompany a fleet, joyous, highly original performance of Bach's Goldberg Variations was was a surprise best-seller that has remained in print for decades.
At the peak of his career, after nine years of stardom, Gould abruptly announced that he was withdrawing from live performance. He pointed out that most creative artists were able to tinker and perfect a statement but that live performers had to recreate their work from scratch with each appearance. He believed a "tremendous conservatism" resulted and thought the recording medium (and, later, radio, television, and film) provided a healthier meeting ground for performer and listener. Despite many offers, some of them enormously lucrative, Gould never played in public after 1964, preferring to live quietly in Toronto and work on his recordings and films.
