Glenn Evan Markoewas born on January 29, 1951, in New York City, New York, United States. He was the son of Gerald Markoe and Ruth (Rothman) Markoe.
Markoe received his Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of California in Berkeley, in 1973, 1975 and 1981 respectively.
Markoe began his career at the University of California in Berkeley. For two years from 1976, he held the position of a research assistant at Lowie Museum of Anthropology, located at the university's campus. Markoe received a Fulbright Research Fellowship in Cyprus. He worked on a different on-site archaeology digs.
For a year from 1979, Markoe was a research associate at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, working as an assistant curator of ancient art there, during the next one-year period of time. He then moved to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where he got a job as an assistant in ancient Near Eastern art from 1981 to 1982. Next year he was a research consultant at the Glencaim Museum in Bryn Athyn.
Markoe was appointed as a curator of collections at the Fleming Museum of Art located at the University of Vermont in Burlington, working there for 4 years from 1984. From 1988 to 2012 he served as a curator of classical and Near Eastern art, as well as administrative head of Department of Classical, Near and Far Eastern Art and Arts of Africa and the Americas at the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Markoe was the author of exhibition catalogs and museum guides, as well as a contributor of articles and reviews to periodicals, including such as the Metropolitan Museum Journal, the Classical Antiquity, the Levant, the Archaeology, the Arts of Asia, the Occasional Papers in Classical Antiquity and the Iranica Anqiqua.

1986Markoe was a member of the American Institute of Archaeology and the Phi Beta Kappa.
Markoe used to joke that he knew nine languages, 3 of which had not been spoken in 2000 years. When someone asked him if he was fluent in Greek, his answer would be the question “Modern or Ancient?” He knew both.
