Background

Blennerhassett, Harman was born on October 8, 1765 in Hampshire, England. Son of Conway and Miss (Lacy) Blennerhassett.

Education

Graduate Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.

Career

Admitted to Irish bar, 1790. Came to the United States, 1796. Owned estate on island in Ohio River, near Parkersburg, Virginia (now O.), home became headquarters for Aaron Burr and his followers who planned to colonize Western lands and invade Mexico.

Island captured by Wood County (Virginia) Militia, 1806. Arrested after escape to Kentucky, charges dropped after Burr was found innocent, 1807. Estate ruined by militia invasion, fire and floods.

Became cotton planter in Mississippi. Practiced law, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, 1819-1822. Returned to England, 1822.
