Yoakum, Henderson was born on September 6, 1810 in Powell’s Valley, Tennessee, United States. Son of George and Cally (Maddy) Yoakum.

Education

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1832.

Career

Brevetted Second lieutenant, 3d Artillery, United States Army, 1832. Commissioned captain Murphreesboro Sentinels, company of Tennessee Mounted Militia, circa 1833. Served as colonel regiment Tennessee Infantry in Cherokee War, 1838.

Member Tennessee Senate, 1839-1845. Admitted to Republic of Texas bar, 1845. Served with regiment of Texas Mounted Rifles during Mexican War, 1845-1846, First lieutenant at Battle of Monterey.

County in West Texas named in his honor, 1876. Author: History of Texas from Its First Settlement in 1685 to Its Annexation to the United States in 1846 (1st history of Texas), 1855.
