Commissioned Lieutenant Canadian Army, 1910. Served with Field Artillery, Canadian Expeditionary Force, World War I. Became staff officer, artillery Department National Defense, 1920.

General staff officer War Office, London, 1925-1927. Also filled posts as professor tactics, and commandant Royal Military College of Canada, and senior officer Military Headquarters, London. Serving overseas since 1940.

Chief Canadian General Staff, 1940-1941. Appointed to command 2d Division Overseas, December 1941, to command Canadian Corps, with rank of Lieutenant general, April 1942. Commander Canadian Army Overseas since March 1944.
